5 Days of Movie Posters

Project Overview

For this project, I wanted to create 5 unique movie posters in 5 different styles that I liked and wanted to try to match. Each poster had a 24-hour window to be completed.

I chose to create movie posters because I wanted to design something unique and creative that people could easily recognize. I started by brainstorming movies in three categories: classics, movies I like, and movies that could fit the styles I chose to replicate.

Choosing the Styles

Here are the styles that I chose as well as the poster in that style. I chose these styles because I thought they were visually appealing and I wanted to learn how they were created. Matching the text, color choices, and overall design is something I need to be better at and practicing has taught
me how important it is to pay attention to all the small details of a design.

Deciding on a Concept

Before sketching, I came up with three ideas that could go with each style. For this example, I chose The Princess Bride, Indiana Jones, and Singing in the Rain. After completing a ton of quick during the exploration phase, I picked the best/most relevant sketches to sketch again.

The highlighted sketches are examples of how a sketch changes from the first sketch to the second or third. I repeated this process for all of my designs.

Pushing the Design Further

After settling on a concept, I sketched out several compositions. I tried out different elements, framing, and sizing. I picked a couple of my favorites and refined them. You can see how the sketches on the left are rough sketches with minimal detail while the sketches on the right are much more refined. A struggle I faced during this process was the text placement and deciding how much text to include in each design. This was helpful becuase when I got into the final, I could quickly place and size my text without much hassle. It was important to me to refine these sketches as much as possible so that when I began the actual designs I had a solid framework.

Sketching Process

Here are several elements that made it to the final design and what they looked like during the different sketching phases. During the exploration phase, I sketched out everything I could think of related to the movie. The ideation phase allowed me to further refine some of these. Next was the iteration phase, which was where I tried out different compositions. Refined iteration allowed me to add more details to my iteration sketches and land on a final concept. With a lot of different sketches I was able to see which ones were the strongest and I was able to narrow my final concept down.
